The aim of this section is to give you a better understanding about DJ Speakers.
All speakers regardless of type or format fall into one of two categories, active or passive. A passive speaker needs power from another source (i.e. a power amplifier). An active or powered speaker has an amplifier built in.

Passive speakers have the advantage of being lighter, cheaper (you do need to buy an amp to power them though) and more flexible, as you don’t need an amp for each speaker. When choosing an amp for passive speakers it’s best to choose one made by the same manufacturer as the speaker. Another tip is to choose an amp with a similar or higher RMS rating to the speaker, i.e., if you have a speaker with a 200 watt RMS rating, then an amp with a 200 watt or higher RMS rating will do. It’s a good idea to also check the power output at 4 ohms resistance and at 8 ohms resistance, and make sure that the speakers can handle the power coming from the amp. Other issues to take into consideration when choosing an amp are a frequency response between 20Hz to 20KHz, plus the higher the Signal to Noise ratio, the better.
Some popular manufacturers of Speakers are JBL, Yamaha and Mackie. |
